The race or at least discussion about the Reno Ward 1 Council seat is getting down and dirty.
One of the principals of Marmot Properties had THIS to say.
Local historian Alicia Barber had THIS response.
Washoe Residents For Appropriate Planning details the Developer/ Construction Industry contributions to the Ward 1 Candidate’s campaigns. $10,050 Brekhus. $136,880 Drakulich.
Any questions?

“It has meant relying on the word of developers, not preservation experts—or at least equally considering both—to determine when a building is capable of renovation, as with the demolition of mid-century motels, for instance, often with city assistance or blessing, leaving in their place vacant lots that benefit no one.“
You have to admire the ability to make a run down crack house that is pilfering drug addicts and alcoholics out of their last dime sound charming.

The developers have turned Reno into a sprawling overpriced dump that exacerbates the boom/bust cycle, perpetuates long-term threats due to wildfire, straps communities with poorly performing and underfunded schools and further removes any hope of a thriving community.
I commend the efforts of Brekhus and the few others at the city who evaluate projects strictly on the merits, code, master plan, prioritize quality of life and refuse to tie themselves into knots in order to get to yes on behalf of the developers. They really are the only ones even trying to protect/promote the people who actually live here.
Out-voted on the council, planning commission and undermined by city staff the efforts of Brekhus, community activists et al, have and will continue to come up short.

OK, I’m convinced they both have serious flaws. Can we just make the seat vacant?
