I see a lot of froth about this announcement, but I think the reality of it is less earth shaking. Reports say that Google purchased this for future data center construction and have no immediate plans to begin construction – although the only people who really know for sure are the people running the project for Google. I do know that Google, Apple, and Facebook all built data centers in Prineville Oregon (among other locations) and can no longer expand there as the area has simply run out of available power. Short of an aluminum smelter I can’t think of another industrial plant that uses as much electricity as a data center. I noticed the other day riding Amtrak 5 that it looks like the power plant out by TRIC may be expanding their distribution system, so no doubt they are making as much power available to TRIC as possible if that is indeed where TRIC gets its power. At the end of the day data centers don’t provide many local jobs once the place gets built and just be glad you’re not out on I-80 East every morning jockeying for position as the USA Parkway exit approaches. Is this another “game changer” for Reno? I say “hardly”, but I wish everyone involved in the project the best of luck.

The perception of action is almost as good as action, especially for hyping the buzz about Reno being the place to be..

Lance Gilman Hates it when we call it TRIC. Could it be that he is turning too many TRICks at his other famous Nevada Destination?
